collection with subcolelctions does not export, save as html, or create citations

I have probably 100+ items in a collection. However only 7 are exported, saved as html or csv.
Any work around?

Can you share a couple screenshots — either here or in an email to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread — of what you're exporting and what you're getting in the export, along with a Debug ID for an export attempt?

@lsdphd: Oh, also, assuming you're right-clicking on the collection to start the export rather than selecting all the items, make sure you're not just viewing items from subcollections with View → Show Items from Subcollections. Items from subcollections might not actually exist in the parent collection.
  • Come on, dstillman. I sent you the screen shots. I am obviously right clicking - how else can I get the options for export, citations, report.
At this point you have not addressed the issue and I don't think you ever will. Zotero is not downloading subcollections. You have the screen shots to prove it.
Great software to keep a ref library online but is now unusable for me to use it for anything else.
  • What? You’re deeply misunderstanding this.

Please read through Etiquette before posting here again.

Anyone responding to you here is trying to help you, and your response is wildly inappropriate.

We can’t see your screen, and there are multiple ways to export things — I’m asking whether you’re right-clicking on the collection or on items directly, and explaining how that can produce different results depending on your settings. It sounds like that’s the issue for you, but you haven’t actually responded to what I said.

We also haven’t received any screenshots from you, either here or via email, and you haven’t provided the Debug ID I asked for if you don’t think what I suggested above applies. If you want our help, you’ll need to provide that.
  • I've been sending you screen shots via email. like this one exporting to csv. And the next one downloading reports and bibs - getting only 9 of about 200 citations. And the info that regardless of whether or not subcollections are checked the same thing happens. Yes the whole point of asking for assistance with the multiple ways of exporting things is that none are working (exporting only 9 of about 200) or working in any useful way - e.g. csv exports are not in any order that I can deternmine unless it is chronilogical for when any citation was added to the entire collection - not by folders/subcollections so basically unusable unless i go back and categorize each one.

    Hi. Thank you.
Here's the structure of my collection "COVID" - there are refs (not all are journals or articles) in each of the subcollections too:

    image.png

    Yes, show subcollections is checked:

    image.png

R click on collection COVID and regardless of what I select (export - csv copied below and report is attached) I only get 9 items:
The bib (also attached) I get 181 items but they are not organized like subcollections. I can't tell how they are organized so basically unusable.

Obviously right clicking to get all the possible options - none working as I copy and pasted.

I assume you're responding to the forums notification email, which goes to a do-not-reply address. As I said above, you can post screenshots here or email support@zotero.org. We haven't received anything from you.
  • So do you have any suggestion or no?
  • Select all items in the top level collection --> right-click --> export items
    as noted above.
  • That is what I have been doing!!!
  • I can't tell for sure what you've been doing, but you said "R click on collection COVID" -- that's not the same as selecting all items in the top level collection in the middle pane (using, on Ctrl+a on Windows/Cmd+a on Mac) and exporting the items rather than the collections.
  • Ctrl+a on Windows does not highlight all the subcollections in the middle section.
I will try to demonstrate again what is not working:
It is only when I open every subcollection do they appear in the middle section.
Again, the order of the listing is the order when it is exported in CSV format. All of the organizing into the subfolders/subcollections goes away. This is what I mean by useless unless I individually recategorize each item in csv file.

    https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u7399791/46azmv7kgpqf057zbdb8.png
  • Also this is what I mean what I say the other options for getting things out of zotero do not work. Whether or not I click on view subcollection only the few items get exported/downloaded as report or bib
    https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u7399791/kap61lmkj74pu9rnng67.png

I don't understand what you mean by that. CSV is a simple tabular format. What would you expect hierarchical collections exported into CSV to look like? But just to confirm, Zotero's CSV export will not preserve any collection structure or information in CSV.

And to further be clear what's expected: When you export a collection in Zotero to CSV, items in subcollections are not exported to CSV. That is independent on the setting in the view menu. (I'm not sure that's ideal behavior, but it's currently expected behavior)

If you want all items in a collection, including in subcollections, exported to CSV, you need to toggle "Show Items from Subcollections" on in the view menu, then select all items in the middle panel (not the collections), right-click and export. Again this export will not include any collection details.

If you do need collection information in the CSV, the easiest would likely be to tag all items in each sub-collection; a bit tedious but pretty quick.

If you need just any export format that includes collection information, Zotero RDF is your best bet. Different from CSV export, that will export items in subcollections as you export the parent collection.
  • So you have confirmed everything I've been saying and screen shotting. There is no solution. It's useful for an online reference library. Period.
