PDF text selection color in Zotero 7

Hi! I noticed that the blue color of the text selection highlighter (not the annotator) in PDFs in Zotero 7 has become darker/more saturated; this makes it hard for me to read the text being selected. The highlighting color for text on webpage snapshots is the standard light blue, which is much easier to read. Is there any way to adjust this? Thank you!

Example of PDF text selection highlighting (dark, harder to read):

  • I can't agree more!

    The change in the text selection highlighter color in Zotero 7 has made it harder for me to read selected text as well. The darker, more saturated blue used in PDFs is particularly straining on the eyes compared to the light blue used for webpage snapshots, which is much more readable. Having the option to adjust or customize the highlighting color would be incredibly helpful for users who prefer a softer tone for better readability.

    It would be great to see this feature considered in a future update! Thanks for bringing this up!

  • I have the same problem, is there a way to modify this color? Or is there any plugin that can do it?
  • Yes, the darker blue selection background color in the PDF mixed with the black font is difficult to distinguish, and I hope it can be fixed.
  • I have this habit of selecting the part I'm reading for more focus and with this new dark blue color in Zotero 7 the text is almost unreadable.
  • I found a temporary workaround for this until they fix it. It's not perfect but it makes things better for me.

    1. Install Ethereal Style plugin from their GitHub. This plugin adds a style selection tool to PDF reader.
    2. In PDF reader use this code snippet
    canvas{filter: contrast(150%) !important; }

    This increases the contrast and make things readable. I couldn't find the exact CSS selector for the selected text. Therefore, this increases the contrast for the whole PDF which may cause the figures to look funny.

  • Wow, thank you so much for this workaround! Glad to know I wasn't alone.
