Item types from Pubmed translator

Now that Pubmed contains some preprints and that Zotero got a preprint item type, it may make sense to record preprints as such when saved from Pubmed.

I checked a couple of preprints and they contain the line, when fetched using eutils:
<PublicationType UI="D000076942">Preprint</PublicationType>

With regards to information saved as Article, the needed changes may be
Publication -> Repository
Pages -> Pages (under Extra)
ISSN -> ?
  • Could you get us a couple of PMIDs for preprints?
  • One from bioRxiv: 36798302
    One from aRxiv: 37064529
    One from Research Square: 37398060

    Thank you.
  • When imported to Zotero from nbib these are correctly saved as preprint type but when captured from the browser import icon these are indeed saved as a journal article.
  • ah, thanks, that's helpful, I'll see what we do in the nbib; we can likely port that to Pubmed XML
  • I wanted to bump this. I seem to be gathering more and more preprints on Pubmed, and having the connector recognize preprints would be great.
  • Gentle bump for saving Pubmed preprints as Preprint.

    I don't see in the nbib translator any logic that helps save the preprint properly. As a result, for example, the repository gets dumped into extra as Journal Abbreviation: bioRxiv instead of Repository: bioRxiv. So, I don't think that will be useful. (And the nbib importer also needs updating.)
  • Another gentle bump for this, for those of us who prefer Pubmed as their source for all bibliographic data.

    Apologies for the delay. Pushed an update to handle PubMed XML preprints. Your Zotero Connector should auto-update within a few minutes, or you can update translators manually from the Advanced pane of the Zotero settings.

    Please let me know if the metadata you get now looks right.

    Thank you! This helps a lot.

    I had a quick check with Biorxiv, Arxiv and Research Square.

    With Biorxiv preprints, I had one thing I was not sure: The Biorxiv identifier (like 2025.10.14.682373) goes in Extra as Pages. I wonder if Archive ID is better. I have seen the discussions in the Forums and github for why it is so, so it is probably all fine.

    [deleted a paragraph describing odd behavior that went away after hitting Update Translators again]
  • Both are saved as preprint for me. Please be sure you have the latest version of the PubMed XML translator.
  • Also, since Pubmed has PMID and PMCID for preprints, would it be possible to add them to Extra for preprints?
  • I also get PMID and PMCID in Extra field for both examples.
  • @poettli Sorry, I was confused. Yes, PMID/PMCID are saved. Thank you.
