Narrative Citations APA 7th Edition

Hello everyone,

I´m a recent user of Zotero and I would like to know if any of you could help with narrative citations. How can I do it? I tried already the "suppress author" tool but it's not exactly what a want. I would like something like "Author's name (2014)". By the way, I'm writing with APA 7th edition.

Thank you!

That's exactly what "Suppress Author" lets you do. You have to type the part outside of the parentheses yourself.

Updated instructions: Customize the citation and use Omit Author. See "Narrative Citations with Omit Author” there.
  • Thank you for your help!
  • Is there any plan for a feature to do this formatting automatically? i.e. to automatically generate "Author's name (2014)" instead of "(Author's name 2014)"? Love Zotero but this has been a big shortcoming for me; I mostly work in Markdown or LaTeX where this sort of thing is easy, but the need to manually type in the author names after using "suppress author" in Word is a stumbling block for uptake by my students, particularly when they have lots of citations to deal with
  • Is there any plan for a feature to do this formatting automatically?
    Yes.
  • In the CSL 1.1?
  • CSL 1.1 will formally support this, but the necessary technical components are already in Zotero and its citation processor, so it could potentially happen before CSL 1.1 is finalized.

  • Just putting in another bump for this. Really one of my only remaining gripes with Zotero. Any update would be appreciated.
  • Seconding mathewblanc's bump. I really, really want to see this in Zotero.

    +1

PS. Especially needed in APA7 for citing works with two authors:

1/ parenthetical citations go: "(Smith & Brown 2025)" - with the ampersand.

2/ but narrative citations go "Smith and Brown (2025)…"

, so the user must remember to key in "and" in between the names, while it's easier to just copy the names from under the parentheses before switching to the "Suppress author" version of the citation, and to then paste these names as plain-text before the opening parenthesis. The process is cumbersome enough without that extra bit of &=>and conversion...
