Word (Mac) freezing over after adding a new citation

Recently I have been experiencing problems with the Zotero plug-in for Word on Mac (2019).
After adding a new citation into a text, word freezes over partially.
I can still scroll through the document, but I can no longer drop a cursor in the text, select text, edit text etc.
I can still press buttons in the different word menues and they are visually responsive, but don't do anything.
The problem seems to be linked to the specific document, as I can still open a new word doc (while the other one is frozen), which then works fine.
I have not been able to reproduce the problem in a fresh document. However, if I copy and paste the text from the problematic document into a new word doc, the same issue occurs.
I wonder if the length of the problematic document plays a role (80 pages)? Though it doesn't have a large number of formatted references.

As neither word not Zotero seems to recognise this as a 'crash', I do not get an error prompt.

I have tried the following:
- Restarting word, zotero and my computer itself.
- the solutions offered to similar problems in the following threads:

Thank you for your help!
  • How long have you waited? In a large document in Word for Mac, it could take quite a while. You'll want to make sure you've disabled "Automatically update citations" in the plugin's Document Preferences window, which will speed things up considerably.
