Error log # 1753471578 when trying to import MARC file

I am trying to import into Zotero from Library Thing (where I logged the hundreds of physical copies of my library over many years).

I have the option to export as JSON file, MARC, CSV, or XLS.
https://www.librarything.com/export.php?export_type=marc

I have not had success importing JSON or MARC. I submitted documentation of the error upon importing the MARC file under log # 1753471578.

thank you!
  • Does this also happen if you just export a couple of your books? If so, would you mind putting the exported MARC file somewhere we can download it to take a look?
    Also, which of the two export options ('basic' or 'use existing records') are you using?
  • Thanks for your response. I tried a few different things, and have uploaded exports 2, 4, and 5 to troubleshoot. You can download them here: https://we.tl/t-dMkeTbwE6O

    Export 2 is only 7 books, and they imported without errors using both 'basic' and 'existing records' settings.

    Exports 4 (basic) and 5 (existing records) include the whole library of 773 items, and neither one of them imported.

    I will note that a fair number of items do not have ISBN numbers or would not exist with a MARC record, since they are artist's books, zines, and rare items.

    Thanks for your help!
  • That's an error in the MARC they're exporting. If you open this in a text editor, you'll see an error message come up a bunch (7, to be exact, for the basic export) of times:

    html>
    <head>
    <title>Bad Request</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <h1><p>Bad Request</p></h1>
    Request Line is too large (4298 &gt; 4094)
    </body>
    </html>

    The first time this shows is right after the "Living Origami" entry -- if I see this correctly, the entry followed by that error message is broken and will cause an import error. You should be able to delete these in the MARC, but it's a bit fiddly (the first three are Living Origami, Lady Hamilton, For colored girls who have considered for )

    Thanks for looking at the exports! I tried to remove all of the error entries, but it still won't import. Maybe I didn't correctly adjust where the MARC entry starts and ends? Below is the full text of a few that I removed:

  • Sorry... I'm not sure how to post HTML content here as plain text, but the "bad request" sections I removed are the plain text versions, as in your comment above.
  • This should work:
    https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/t0xz5lf2dgf31pcma56s0/librarything_ceberrigan4.marc?rlkey=tsdq1tz5luskqx7382hc5zc8x&dl=0

    Looks like some items go missing -- his imported 754 for me, I removed 7 bad request tags, so that leaves 12 unaccounted for. I didn't actually remove any entry in the MARC, though, and the MARC has only 754 items, so all missing info is on LibraryThing.
  • Amazing, that worked for me. It's so generous of you to help me fix the MARC export! Many many thanks. :) :) :)
