Support for DOI in other documents

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is crucial in academic research and references. Especially for Internet research, it is crucial to produce persistent references.

However, there is little support for this in Zotero. The document type "Journal article" has a field for DOI, but for Book chapters, books, documents, podcasts, etc., there are no such fields - only the highly elusive URL.

More and more researchers need to reference their data with persistent references to web archives, using Persistent Web IDentifier (PWID). This is a kind of DOI, but at the moment, there is no support for DOI or PWID in other document types.

For newspapers, documents and other, a DOI or PWID field would be great to have!

A DOI field will be added to all item types in the not-too-distant future. There just haven't been any type/field updates in Zotero in over a decade for technical reasons.

You can add "DOI: 10.1234/abc" to the Extra field now to add a DOI in citations for item types where there's not yet a dedicated field.
  • FWIW, the absence of a DOI field e.g. in the book item type is a real pain in the proverbial when integrating to online research tools like Researchrabbit, scite and others that use DOI extensively or exclusively. Pretty please, with cherries and sugar sprinkles on top, add it as soon as you can.
  • @dstillman "A DOI field will be added to all item types in the not-too-distant future." That is SOOO exciting! Any idea when this will happen? Is it in Z7? Thanks!
  • This is the improvement I just need.
