I would like to stop the automating updating of zotero on a Mac running 10.9.5

app.update.autoin the Config Editor in the Advanced pane of the preferences, but I would strongly recommend just updating macOS.All Macs running 10.9 or 10.10 can be updated to at least 10.11. You're running an OS that hasn't received security updates in many years and that is no longer supported by most modern software. (We haven't supported 10.11 in years, and neither have any of the major browsers.)
To be clear, we won't provide any support for Zotero as long as you're running an outdated version on 10.9, and various things (website compatibility, syncing, etc.) will stop working for you as Zotero development continues.
