Zotero experienced an error updating your document when I insert bibliography

Report ID:1651620070
Like my title said. Every time I click the button "Add/Edit bibliography", sometimes bibliography editing window will pop out, but my bibliography never showed up.
I use Word2019 (Version 16.61) (22050700)/ Zotero 6 (Version 6.0.8)
Can anyone solve this problem for me? Many thanks!
  • See Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents.

But if the bibliography editing window pops up, you already have a bibliography in the document. If you're not seeing it, toggle Word field codes and search for ZOTERO_BIBL, and then delete the field completely.
  • This is my field codes showing "ADDIN ZOTERO_BIBL {"uncited":[],"omitted":[],"custom":[]} CSL_BIBLIOGRAPHY"

I deleted this "ADDIN ZOTERO_BIBL {"uncited":[],"omitted":[],"custom":[]} CSL_BIBLIOGRAPHY" but nothing happens.
  • What do you mean "nothing happens"? After deleting that completely, you'll want to toggle field codes back and then insert a new bibliography.
  • Sorry, I think I misunderstood your mean.
However, in Word, I click "Insert > Quick Parts > Field", but I can't find "ZOTERO_BIBL" in my field.
  • "Insert > Quick Parts > Field"
No, it has nothing to do with this. I linked to instructions for toggling field codes above.
  • Sorry I still can't get it. I have read the link you paste above, but the info I get is to show the field code after I insert citation or bibliography. What am I supposed to do after I insert the bibliography and show the field code (which in my case is "ADDIN ZOTERO_BIBL {"uncited":[],"omitted":[],"custom":[]} CSL_BIBLIOGRAPHY"
  • I explained this above. Delete the entire section containing the bibliography so that none of the gray highlight is remaining, toggle field codes off so you're no longer seeing codes in your document, and then insert the bibliography again.
  • I followed the instructions you suggested. However, when I delete the entire section containing the bibliography, toggle field codes off and click "Add bibliography" again.
The message "Zotero experienced an error updating your document " still popped out
  • However on my another MacBook, using Word 2016, I can normally access the bibliography. I don't know what happened? Are there any compatibility problem between Zotero6 and Word2019?

If you can insert citations and a bibliography in a new document, you'll need to follow the steps on the Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents page I linked to above to troubleshoot the problem in the existing document. We'd also want a Report ID for the error.
  • I can only insert citation but I can't not insert bibliography no matter in existing document or in a new document.

Disable all third-party extensions while troubleshooting this.

What are the exact steps to reproduce this in a new document? Does it happen if you insert only an empty item with title "Test", or only if you insert an item with non-English characters? Is Word set to a language other than English?
  • @chunweilai: You should also try just restarting your computer if you haven't yet.
  • For reference, here's a thread where it was fixed by setting Word to English:

  • @dstillman You are amazing. After change Word default language to English, the problem just gone. Thank you very much! Glad to see the function work well.
