Point to a stored file on my computer rather than create a copy

Sorry to hijack this thread and for the 'newbie' question!
Is it possible to have Zotero point to a stored file on my computer rather than create a copy, this duplicating lots of files. I realise, of course, that this will not then be available across devices.
