Zotero crashing when opened

I recently updated Zotero to version 6 and it repeatedly crashes when I open the program. I'm unable to get a debug ID due to the startup error so I logged it to a terminal and will email the log separately (referencing this post).

Info:
I'm running it on Mac OS v11.06.
I have uninstalled / reinstalled several times.
I have restarted the computer several times.
"Crashing" = pinwheel of death + "program not responding"
I have let it run with the pinwheel going for several hours in the background to see if it's a process that just needed to finish or something, but it doesn't resolve.
The problem apparently spontaneously resolved yesterday when I re-opened the program, and the program worked fine up until about 30 minutes ago when it crashed again. During that time, I used it to both automatically and manually enter references and insert citations and bibliographies using the Word plugin. When it crashed, I had just pulled up the window of the open program to look at a citation, but had not clicked on anything.

I'm utterly stumped and I appreciate any help you can offer!

  • If you log to a terminal window, do you see output while it's frozen? If not, can you send the last few hundred lines of the output to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?
  • @mwfrancis: Go the file, but you didn't answer my question. Do you see output while it's frozen? The debug output just shows an active file sync.

If it's stopping, does it stop at the exact same line every time?
  • Sorry, I had to take a call. It stops at the same spot as far as I can tell. I've re-run the terminal startup and logging multiple times, and it looks like that each time.
  • And no, no output while frozen.

When it freezes, what do you see in Activity Monitor? Is Zotero using 100% CPU?

If you hold down Shift when starting Zotero (to enable Safe Mode), does that help?

If you disconnect your computer from the internet (e.g., by disabling wifi) to prevent syncing, does Zotero start up?
  • 1. Activity monitor: the past 3 starts ranged in the 40-70% CPU range

    2. Starting in safe mode: That did nothing as far as I can tell. I have not tried restarting the entire computer in safe mode and then opening Zotero yet, but can if that's warranted.

    3. Starting with no internet: Yes! it's working so far!

However: new warning when trying to do things in Word
"Citing in Word on an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 11.3 or earlier is not supported and may cause Zotero to freeze. Please upgrade to macOS 11.4 or later." I'm running 11.6, so I'm not sure what that's about?

    Next warning:
"Zotero does not have permission to control Word. To grant this permission:

    1) Open System Preferences
    2) Click on “Security & Privacy”
    3) Select the “Privacy” tab
    4) Find and select “Automation” on the left
    5) Check the checkbox for “Microsoft Word” under “Zotero”
    6) Restart Word"
That box was already checked. Unchecking, re-checking it, and restarting Word did not help.

  • If you temporarily disable file syncing in the Sync pane of the preferences (but leave auto-sync enabled), are you able to start Zotero without an error?

Are you running any sort of non-standard security software on this computer?
Please upgrade to macOS 11.4 or later.
@adomasven will have to look into that.

What's your exact version of Word?
Zotero does not have permission to control Word.
Restart your computer and try again. If that doesn't help, open Terminal from Spotlight and run this command:

    tccutil reset AppleEvents

That should clear all entries in the prefs. Then try again and see if it's any different.
  • "If you temporarily disable file syncing in the Sync pane of the preferences (but leave auto-sync enabled), are you able to start Zotero without an error?"
I apologize, I'm not sure how to do that?

I do not have any non-standard security software, just the standard Mac security options.
    Word: version 16.59

Restarted, ran the AppleEvents reset, and re-opened Zotero but it's still freezing on startup.
  • I apologize, I'm not sure how to do that?
    Zotero menu → Preferences
Restarted, ran the AppleEvents reset, and re-opened Zotero but it's still freezing on startup.
That was for the Word permissions issue.
  • Ok, Zotero is working with the file sharing turned off, and Word is working with it. So far so good?
  • That's a temporary solution, but we'll have to figure out why file syncing is causing it to hang.

What macOS version is this? "11.06" isn't a real version.
  • Big Sur 11.6

11.6 exactly? Not a later version? While it may not help, if you really mean 11.6, you should update to 11.6.5 or Monterey.
