APA 7 - problem with et al. in citations

Hey there! I've stumbled on an error in APA 7 in Zotero regarding et al. in citations.

According to APA in chapter 8.18 Avoiding Ambiguity in In-Text Citations:

"Because "et al." is plural (meaning "and others"), it cannot stand for only one name. When only the final author is different, spell out all names in every citation". (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 267)

Here's an example of two journal articles I added to my Zotero and this is how they came out using APA 7:

Citations Zotero created in Word:
(Larsen, Sigurdsson, Breivik, Fagerstrøm, et al., 2020)
(Larsen, Sigurdsson, Breivik, & Orquin, 2020)

Bibliography Zotero created in Word:
Larsen, N. M., Sigurdsson, V., Breivik, J., Fagerstrøm, A., & Foxall, G. R. (2020). The marketing firm: Retailer and consumer contingencies. Managerial and Decision Economics, 41(2), 203–215. https://doi.org/10.1002/mde.3053

Larsen, N. M., Sigurdsson, V., Breivik, J., & Orquin, J. L. (2020). The heterogeneity of shoppers’ supermarket behaviors based on the use of carrying equipment. Journal of Business Research, 108, 390–400. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jbusres.2019.12.024

Correct citations here should not include any et al.:
(Larsen, Sigurdsson, Breivik, Fagerstrøm, & Foxall, 2020)
(Larsen, Sigurdsson, Breivik, & Orquin, 2020)
  • This isn’t possible in CSL. For what it is worth, even APA’s own journals do not follow this rule.

APA is also wrong here. “Et al” is not necessarily plural. It can stand for “et alia” (and others) or “et alius” (and another). Both the singular and plural phrases are abbreviated “et al”
  • (it's alius or alia singular (m/f); alii or aliae plural (m/f). alia is the neutral plural as in inter alia, among other things)
  • Alright! Thank you for your response. I won't stress over this then :-)
