Upgrade StorageSetting an empty attribute

I need to fill an empty attribute with a specific value. I know how to change a value A by a value B, but it does not work when A is null.
It concerns the journalAbbreviation attribute which is related to publicationTitle with some spelling rules.
does anyone can help me for this? thank you

franvalYes with a javascript. I guess it is possible to replace an empty field with a specifif value for all records in a collection. It am doing so for replacing a value by another one
