Word crashes when incerting citation

Report ID : 1369427394

Hello,
Often though not always, when I try to add a citation an error comes up and Word crashes. When I reopen Word I can usually insert the citation. Sometimes I have to reopen it two times. I do not need to restart Zotero. Zotero usually shows no error message. After a crash, if I restart Word before clicking on “enter” once I selected the reference I want to quote, I receive a message that guides me to this page: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/debugging_broken_documents
However, the general advice given on this page (points 1-3) do not fix the problem. Since the issue happens with almost every document I use and since I am able to insert the quotes I want by restarting Word, I am not following the following steps (points 4-10).

I have got this issue for a few months but it happened only once in a while. These last few days it happened more and more frequently (I would say for half the quotes I wish to insert). This might be linked to the fact that I am in a process of re-writing chapters of my dissertation, which implies that I copy-paste big amounts of text and references.

I am working with Word 2016 (for Windows), and I have the latest updates of zotero (5.0.96.2).

I see this issue has come up several times recently on the forum, though without any good solution being proposed.
In 2019, this happened as well and seems to have been resolved by an update of zotero :

Many thanks for your help!
  • Yeah, sorry. This is a Word/Microsoft issue, even if Zotero triggers it. Zotero uses the integration points provided by Word, so even if using Zotero with Word triggers the crash, there's still nothing we can do, especially since this is not something that can be reliably reproduced. Your best bet is to send all crash logs to Microsoft and try and reach out to their support, unless you find a way to reliably reproduce the issue.
