Book isbn not found ...

Hello,

I can't add this book automatically from its isbn number, it is not found.
However I don't know a better reference source than the national library, I'm very surprised that it's not the zotero source list.

Zotero uses 2 sources for ISBNs, the US Library of Congress (not vers useful for non-English books) and Worldcat:

Worldcat is a great international source, but it depends on participating libraries to share the content of their respective catalogs. And unfortunately, a number of important libraries (which apparently includes the French national library) do not participate - probably due to licencing issues.

Fortunately, you can easily bypass this problem by using the more natural Zotero data entry method:

    https://www.zotero.org/support/adding_items_to_zotero#via_your_web_browser

Just open the library record in your browser, click the "Save to Zotero" button, and you're done. It even works for documents that do not have an ISBN...
  • Thanks,
    Zotero web plugin works.
It's not perfect, but better than nothing
  • What do you see as "not perfect"?
  • (Zotero uses more than two sources for ISBN metadata — I think six or so — but ISBN lookup is still inherently more limited than for other identifiers due to the lack of a universal metadata system.)
  • I think we have only 4, the 4th one (Lulu?) doesn't work particularly well -- and it looks like BnF has an SRU interface, and those tend to be lightning fast so we could consider adding this in the queue between GBV/K10 and Worldcat

It's not perfect with the Zotero Plug-in because data don't go to the good place (meda-data).

BNF is the reference source on the French territory, it seems logical that it is fully compatible with zotero
  • BNF is supported via the Save to Zotero button and that item imports well. We just don't use its ISBN data because every library we add there makes the overall lookup process slower.
  • Just pushed an update that adds BnF ISBN search in Add Item(s) by Identifier. Your Zotero translators should auto-update within 5 minutes, or you can update manually by clicking "Update now" in the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences.

Huh? Can you be more specific?

    >Huh? Can you be more specific?
In my example, the author is not record, and the editor has the author name
So not perfect, but it's works, and i'm ok

    Thanks for all infos
  • @AbeJellinek -- it looks like BnF either takes a while to input author types properly in MARC, or they changed their cataloging and authors of newer works are sometimes ignored on web import (they work fine using the new SRU/MARCXML). In addition to the above, see e.g.
    https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb468389581
There is no MARC 700 $4 field, but instead a plain text designation in 700 c
