Document back up

I understand that using cloud storage systems with Zotero is risky. Other than backing up documents on an external hard drive, does anyone have experience with other safe back up systems (I use Windows OS)? Thanks kindly, Elaine.
  • Several option:
    - Just use Zotero file storage in additional to an external HD. Zotero storage isn't versioned, so it's not ideal as your only back-up, but as you fall-back if something goes wrong locally (e.g. computer & local HD get stolen) it works fine
    - Dedicated online back-up (as opposed to cloud sync) services such as Carbonite or Backblaze -- since they only back up and don't sync bidirectionally, they're OK to use with Zotero
    - Point your cloud storage sync to the folder on the external HD holding your back-up. That way it serves as a back-up of your back-up. This won't work with every cloud service.
    - You could look symlink the storage folder within the Zotero data directory (but not the data directory itself!) to a location on your cloud sync folder. That will back-up your documents but will not create an additional back-up of your database, which arguably is the more valuable part of your Zotero data, though.

  • Thanks Adam! I really appreciate you taking the time, good advice!
