citation style

Hi, I am currently in the middle of formating my PhD thesis and switched to Zotero, as reference manager was driving me crazy. I am having some problems with zotero, but I think they are all fixable, however, being technically incompetent I am a bit worried about attempting to fix it.

I have been using the Harvard referencing method, and ideally would like to use the Human Molecular Genetics. Alternatively, if the problem I am encountering with the Harvard method then I can stick with that.

The problem is everytime I cite a person who has got more than one citations in my main libraray- it starts including sometimes their first names and sometimes their initials, and sometimes X et.al 2008.
For example,
(Asa Abeliovich & Flint Beal 2006; Asa Abeliovich & Hammond 2007; A Abeliovich et al. 2000).
(Zimprich et al. 2003; Zimprich, Müller-Myhsok et al. 2004; Zimprich, Biskup et al. 2004)

Is there any way apart from manually editing the citations to only say X et al. 2008? and if there are more than two citations for the first author in one year, can I set it for it to 2008a and 2008b?

Also if I manually edit them would the bibliography at the end work ok?

Or does anyone know of a citation style that I could install and won't cause these problems?

Thanks a lot,
  • this happens when Zotero doesn't know it's the same author:
    Zotero can't tel if Asa Abeliovich and A Abeliovich are the same person - there could be an Albert Abeliovich - so it treats them as separate authors that need to be disambiguated.
    For all those authors, make sure that first names are exactly the same and that will go away.
    Not sure about the 2nd issue - one of the disambiguation experts will have to weigh in.
  • Hi,

    Thanks a lot. Yeah I checked it was the same author for the first bit of citation.

    Do you know if there is anyway to set it up so that it cites as X et al. 2004a, X et al.2004b, instead of putting names of the second authors to distinguish between the papers?

    Thanks again
  • Assuming you're using Harvard Reference format 1 (Author-Date), you should delete the line

    <option name="disambiguate-add-names" value="true"/>

    in the CSL style.

    Hi Simon,
    I feel your pain - me too.

    Are you happy with editing the CSL yourself?

    If so, then Rintze's suggestion above make the first name problem totally go away
    (though if you do have a John Smith 2001 and Jeff Smith 2001, they will look the same - it's a risk many are willing to take!)

    For the other issue, in the CSL you need to add this line into the citation section of the code;
    <option name="disambiguate-add-year-suffix" value="true"/>

    Changing the CSL for basic stuff is pretty easy really - I'm a programing idiot and worked it out after an hour or so with the help of this forum, this page, the test pane and some trial and error. (The best thing I did was to download Notepad++ and switch the view to XML when editing the files.)
    That way you can get it to do pretty much exactly what you want, and then it's really satisfying watching everyone else struggle with their references!

    If it's just for your own use, you can give it a comedy name, and you don't have to bother with the tricky bits - validating and uploading and stuff.

    If you really can't work it out, or have to submit very very soon, then I could send you my own citation style for you to use - it seems to have the attributes you are after.

    (how do you guys do that pasting code into a box thing!)
    Use <blockquote>some text</blockquote> for blockquotes, and <code>some text</code> for code blocks. You have to set the format of the comments to HTML as well.
  • Thanks - edited the above for clarity!
  • Hi Rintze and Komrade,

    Thank you for yur comments. Just a couple of more questions, if I add or delete an instruction on the CSL, would I have to re-install the software again or just the citation style I have been changing?

    I have been changing the citations manually which is a chore so will have to do what you guys have advised.

    Komrade, I was trying to add the thing how you advised me to, but I am technically very very very incompetent so I am going to struggle. I am going to delete the command first and see how it goes. yeah I am hoping to submit the thesis in mid-september, so if I can't get it to work, can I have your citation style. Hopefully I won't need it. Thanks a lot anyways guys. You have a been a great help.

    Si
  • hey -
    you just need to re-install the style - you should make sure to re-install it under a different name and with a different ID - I've written brief instructions for simple changes such as this one in another thread -

    If you follow Adam Smith's instructions, you'll be right.

    For simple stuff like this, you generally only need to change the <title>and<ID> sections at the very top (to make it a new style), and the sections (usually near the bottom) marked as <citation>and<bibliography>
    The various options listed here
    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/csl_syntax_summary#citation_only_options
    may be of use.

    If you are changing a few things at a time, or need to use search, you can copy all the code stuff from the top window in the Test Pane, paste it into an editor like Notepad (or better Notepad++), fiddle with it, then paste it back to see what it does. When you are happy, save as a .csl file, then drag into Firefox, as per Adams' instructions.
  • Thanks a lot guys, I will be sure try that. Have a really good weekend.

  • Take a look here Si and see if you can follow this step-by-step guide.

    Any tips on making the page clearer would be useful.
