Create library folder in Zotero from Microsoft Word Doc

Hello! I was wondering if there was a way to create a folder from only the references that are actually cited in a Word Doc.

For example, my team uses a shared Library folder with 250 references in it. We only cite 50 of those references within our Word Doc. Is there an easy way to create a new Library folder that only includes the 50 cited references? Thanks!
  • Automatic Document Collections like you describe are planned, but not yet available.

For now, you can use the Reference Extractor tool (https://rintze.zelle.me/ref-extractor/) to scan your document, then click the button there to select all of the items in your library, then drag these together to a collection.
  • Awesome, thanks for the quick reply.
  • The extractor doesn't seem to be working...I select my .docx file and the buttons stay greyed-out/dead. Any suggestions?
  • @cleonett, does the Reference Extractor work if you create a new Word document with just one Zotero citation?

You can also try whether this Word document works: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xf4up9j4mmaadli/ref-extractor-test.docx?dl=1. If it does, that would rule out your browser as the problem.

If you can share your Word document (the original or a small test version), I can take a look at that too, and try it on my system. I can give you my email address if you want to try that, just let me know.
  • Any update on if this feature is available yet? It would be very useful. Thanks!
  • I haven't checked in the past couple of months but ref-extractor should work if you have active Zotero cites. If you have removed the active fields and just have a "flat" document, no.

If you have word processor documents or pdf documents you can use AnyStyle to facilitate (magically) converting the bibliography to something that can be imported to Zotero: https://anystyle.io/ You will likely need to do some "training" of AnyStyle but if you have many references to capture and convert it will be worth your time.
  • Hello!
Is there an update on this feature?
I would love to move all the citations in my thesis to its own folder.
  • @johanhw: bwiernik explains how you can do this now above.
