Zotero won't open a .enw or .ris files

Zotero won't open downloaded .enw or .ris files on Windows 10. I point file explorer to open with at zotero.exe. When opening the file, Zotero opens as expected but the citation is not added to the library

    Zotero cannot import ENW files. You need to export your endnote library to XML first.

    For XML or RIS, in Zotero, click File -> Import-> Import from File… then select the file.

    So I was attempting to export a citation from Google Scholar (without the Firefox extension). Adding the Zotero browser extensions solved my issue.

    An error message regarding a citation failing to import may be useful.
