Word 2007 Plugin crash on Windows Vista
I’ve had a huge problem with Word 2007 on a Windows Vista, after a update, but I was able to solve it.
Problem:
After manual installation of Zotero.dot on Startup directory, Word continuously crashed; I couldn’t save any file, and when I exited the program, it also crashed. I tried to eliminate the zotero.dot from the startup directory, but the problem remained, since the Word always tried to run it even though it didn’t exist.
Solution:
First try to see if the problem is really with the zotero plug-in.
Run “winword /a”; that will run the program without any plug-ins. If it works fine, then you can deduce that the problem is with the Zotero file.
The problem that I had was due to winword registry on regedit. If you follow this steps you will be able to solve the problem:
Delete the Word Data registry key
Most of the frequently used options in Word are stored in the Word Data registry key. A common troubleshooting step is to delete the Word Data registry key. The next time that you start Word, Word rebuilds the Word Data registry key by using the default settings.
To view these options in Word 2002 or Word 2003, click Options on the Tools menu.
To view these options in Word 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
Note When you delete the Word Data registry key, Word resets several options to their default settings. One such option is the "most recently used file" list on the File menu. Additionally, Word resets many settings that you customize in the Options dialog box.
To delete the Word Data registry key, follow these steps:
1. Exit all Office programs.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running:
o Word 2002:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft \Office\10.0\Word\Data
o Word 2003:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\11.0\Word\Data
o Word 2007:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\12.0\Word\Data
4. Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu.
5. Name the file Wddata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.
6. Click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes.
7. Exit Registry Editor.
8. Start Word.
If Word starts and works correctly, you have resolved the problem. The problem was a damaged Word Data registry key. You may have to change several settings to restore your favorite options in Word.
If the problem is not resolved, restore the original Word Data registry key. Then, see the "Delete the Word Options registry key" topic.
To restore the original Word Data registry key, follow these steps:
1. Exit all Office programs.
2. Double-click the Wddata.reg icon on the desktop.
3. Click Yes, and then click OK.
After doing this, I solved my problem.
Till there’s another solution available, do like this:
Don’t copy the zotero.dot to the startup directory; do like this: go to Word Options > Plug-ins > Manage Models > Go; then I manually added the zotero.dot which I keep in My Documents. Every time I want to work with zotero, I just follow this step.
I’m using a Portuguese version of Word 2007, please forgive me if the translation into english are not accurate enough.

I just wanted to help anyone that had the same problem as me… Worked for me… I didn’t try to put the zotero.dot again in the Startup directory, works fine like this. This can be helpful for those non-English users that have to do the manual installation. I wished I could develop a more stable Zotero 2.0 plug-in for Word 2007, but I just don’t have the skill or the knowledge.
Sorry about the cross-posting but I didn’t know where it would be better to post. I love Zotero and I’ll talk about it to my colleagues and students.
At any rate, thanks for posting your workaround.
