Problem installing Zotero with libreoffice and firefox in Debian

Hello,
I am new to Debian, which has been recently installed on my computer. I have problems with the installation of Zotero, which I need to use with Libreoffice/firefox. I checked my installation following the instructions here below, without success :
https://www.zotero.org/support/fr/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting

The symptoms :
-the zotero icon do not appear in firefox
-the zotero toolbar do not appear in libreOffice
-the zotero extension do not appear in the extension manager of LibreOffice (my installation is in french, sorry if I do not give the precise interface's names)
-if I go to Zotero/Preferences/Word processors, and that I try to reinstall the LibreOffice module (which appears there to be installed), I get a window "Select LibreOffice unopkg executable", where no directory is listed.

And for information, the Zotero's installation process pushed Zotero in a directory in my home/user directory. I checked that the Java is installed and recognized in LibreOffice. I reinstalled Zotero. I reinstalled LibreOffice.

Do you have an idea ?
Best regards,
Anne.
  • the zotero icon do not appear in firefox
This has nothing to do with that page. For that, you need to have the Zotero Connector installed. See No Toolbar Button.
the zotero toolbar do not appear in libreOffice
For this, go through the English version of that page, which has the latest troubleshooting information:

    https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting

If you're still having trouble, say everything you've tried and what happened at each step.

You should also make sure you've testing with the official tarball of Zotero or zotero-deb. We can't provide support for other packaged versions.
  • It’s now ok for the toolbar button in Firefox : I got it ! (thanks !)

Concerning LibreOffice, I still do not have the Zotero toolbar : I went to the paqe https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting
-I followed the process « Zotero toolbar doesn’t appear » : in Zotero’s preferences, I opened the Cite pane, and then the Word Processors tab, and I clicked on « Réinstaller le module Office ». Then I accessed to the « Select LibreOffice unopkg executable » : but no directory was listed in this box.
    - I then went to the page « Manually Installing the Zotero Word Processor Plugin », and then to the
LibreOffice section. Following the given instructions, I then went to the directory where Zotero is installed (/user/Zotero), but did not find there the extensions directory.

Concerning the Zotero version. I installed Zotero through the software module of Debian. On the page where you launch the installation, there is a « Web site » button which lead to www.zotero.org. The version is 5,0,96,2. Is it ok ?
  • ~/Zotero is your data directory, not your installation directory.
  • I installed Zotero through the software module of Debian.
This is an unofficial version of Zotero that we have nothing to do with. We can't help you with that version.
  • ok. So, I desinstalled the previous version (creazy that Debian offers a Zotero version that is not supported by Zotero !!!). And I installed Zotero following the above given link to Zotero-deb. I got this :

  • It looks like you skipped one of the commands.
  • In fact I did not give you the all sequence I did : below the first step

    Note that the instruction is:

wget -qO- https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-deb/releases/download/apt-get/install.sh | sudo bash

so `bash` seems to lack at the end of your command.

PS: I also use Debian (oldstable version 9/Stretch), with official tarball of Zotero (https://www.zotero.org/download/) and have no problem.
  • I'd be happy enough to make my package script for zotero-deb available to Debian, but the demands made by their build environment requires building zotero from source, and my scripts don't, so they're unlikely to be accepted by debian.
  • Ok. Thanks a lot for the missing "bash". The installation process seemed to execute with success. I did not get any error message. And I could launched Zotero.

But, in the Word Processors tab of the Cite pane of the Zotero preferences, I don’t see the “Install LibreOffice Add-in” button.
So, following the instructions to repair the Zotero installation:
    1. I go to Tools → Add-ons in Zotero.
    2. The “Zotero LibreOffice Integration” is enabled.
    3. I still don't see the installation buttons in the Cite → Word Processors pane of the Zotero preferences. I therfore opened my Zotero profile directory, and I deleted extensions.json, and restart Zotero. And this helped, because I now get the message « Le module LibreOffice est installé » in the Cite/Word Processors pane of the Zotero preferences.
    4. I clicked on « Réinstaller le module LibreOffice », and then get a « Zotero LibreOffrice Plugin Installation » window. I get the message « The Zotero LibreOffice Plugin requires the following packages : default-jre ». I press « Next » as indicated. And then I get the message « An error occurred installing required packages. While you can attempt to install the Zotero LibreOffice Plugin anyway, it is unlikely to work. Click Cancel to abord the installation process. » If I click on Next, I get the message : « Select LibreOffice installations from the list below, or click « Add installation » to locate the path to an LibreOffice installation directory not shown in the liste. And in the list, I see usrbin/unopkg and usr/lib/libreoffice/program/unopkg.

Should I go on and select on of these paths ?
  • You need to install a Java JRE.
  • I installed a java jre.
Then in the Cite/word processors, I find the message "Le module LibreOffice n'est pas installé". I click on "Installer le module libreOffice".
In the "Zotero LibreOffice Plugin installation" window, I get the two paths previously described (my previous comment). I click on Next, and then I get the error message "L'installation n'a pu aboutir car une erreur s'est produite. Veuillez vous assurer que LibreOffice est fermé, puir redémarrez Zotero". Indeed LibreOffice was closed. I launch Zotero again, and get the same situation.
  • How to find the directory where Zotero is installed ?
  • It's your system. That's something you would need to know.
  • The zotero-deb docs say it installs within /usr/lib.
  • ok, I found it. And I installed the plugin. And it works!!!!!!! So great.
Thanks a lot for your help, and sorry for the "very beginer" style.
    Bye !
