Adding DOI to Sports Medicine Reference

The most up do date referencing style for Sports Medicine Journal in the Zotero repository was posted in 2014-05-18 01:40:32. Here is the link to this https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=sports medicine (it is the third one down titled Sports Medicine). So unfortunately, this style is a little out of date.

Problem 1.
This version does not include the DOI with in the reference list but the journal asks for the DOI if they are available. Specifically they say "If available, please always include DOIs as full DOI links in your reference list (e.g. “https://doi.org/abc”)." (see here https://www.springer.com/journal/40279/submission-guidelines#Instructions for Authors_References).

One of my current references, for example, is:
1. Hunter AH, Angilletta MJ, Wilson RS. Behaviors of shooter and goalkeeper interact to determine the outcome of soccer penalties. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2018;28:2751–9.

I am not at all smart enough with code to amend the csl file to add in the DOI. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Problem 2.
I thought I might be able to add a DOI with the following - when I am in word and go Zotero -> Document Preferences -> Manage Styles -> and under Citation Options select the box next to "Include URLs of paper articles in references".

However, this amends the citation to:
1. Hunter AH, Angilletta MJ, Wilson RS. Behaviors of shooter and goalkeeper interact to determine the outcome of soccer penalties. Scand J Med Sci Sports [Internet]. 2018 [cited 2021 Mar 24];28:2751–9. Available from: http://doi.wiley.com/10.1111/sms.13276

I'm not sure why it adds "[internet]", and a date it was cited (e.g., [cited 2021 Mar24]). Ideally these would not be added. Plus, I would rather the DOI be added rather than a full link.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  • Is the DOI the only change the style needs?
  • The only other issue I can see is that some of my references include an "available from" link even though I have deselected the "Include URLs of paper articles in references" option. I'm not sure why this is? The information in Zotero for these articles seems to be correct just as for the other articles.

So for example this reference included the available from link (and date downloaded to Zotero) even though I don't think it should.
    12. Bruineberg J, Rietveld E. Self-organization, free energy minimization, and optimal grip on a field of affordances. Front Hum Neurosci [Internet]. 2014 [cited 2021 Mar 25];8. Available from: http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnhum.2014.00599/abstract

    Whereas the majority are:
    1. Hunter AH, Angilletta MJ, Wilson RS. Behaviors of shooter and goalkeeper interact to determine the outcome of soccer penalties. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2018;28:2751–9.

Maybe this issue would be solved if the DOI is added?
  • That Frontiers article doesn’t have page numbers (which determines the “paper article” criterion). An article in Frontiers shouldn’t be cited without a DOI or URL because it’s an online only journal. Once the style is updated, it will just show the DOI.
  • That makes complete sense, thanks for all your help!

How long should I expect the update to take?
