lost links to zotero citations

Hi,
I am using zotero with Word 2016 in a Mac.
I noticed that Zotero was not using the Ibid in turabian style any longer, for subsequent citations but placing the long citation.
I tried to refresh the citations and I received the error please insert a citation before performing this operation.
If I insert a new citation the numbering is correct; if I go over the citation it is highlighted in gray just like a linked citation.
If I tried to insert a Bibliography I receive the same error message of insert a citation before performing this operation. This behavior persists even when I insert a new citation. The only thing that seems working is the numbering.
What can I do? I do not have a back-up copy that works.
I have no clue on how this happened.
Thank you.

If you're using a footnote based Turabian then the order would remain correct even if your citations got unlinked, since the numbering is controlled by Word, not Zotero.

Thanks so much for the clarification. I am quite new to zotero. Even when I enter new citations using zotero they remain unlinked. however when I go over the citation it highlights in gray. If I did accidentally click on unlink; does that mean that the document is now unlinked and it is not possible to link the new citations? Thanks.
  • New citations should be linked fine. You may enable field code display in Word to see whether Zotero citations are actually linked or not. If they are no longer linked there is no automatic way to relink them. Newly added citations should be linked. If they are not see debugging broken documents
  • Thank you so much! Very helpful information; really appreciated.
