After combining duplicate citations

After combining duplicate citations,how do you get the in text citations to match that the duplicates have been updated and combined? I combined the duplicates but then when I open word the in- text citations are still doubled and they are both in my bibliography.

    Did you actually merge the items, or did you delete one? Only merged items with reconcile in your documents.

    In your document, click the Refresh button in the Zotero tab.
