APA 7th edition et al error

I have found if an author is the first author on a several authored paper and zotero is citing it correctly as lets say (Smith et al., 2012) if the same first author has a paper with several authors again (but different from the first paper) in the same paper and those papers are cited simultaneously for similar points then zotero will combine them as (Smith et al,. 2009, 2012). I don't think this is in line with APA but I don't know how to fix it without just editing the output.

I believe that's correct. Not sure the manual addresses this, but the APA blog for the sixth edition did and says Smith et al. 2009, 2012 is correct:

Yes, this collapsing is correct:

In the case of multiple works in which some author names have been abbreviated to "et al." (see Section 8.17), place the citations in chronological order (regardless of the order in which they appear in the reference list).
