MacOS Big Sur 11.0.1 You do not have permission to open the application "Zotero.".

Today, I came across this error suddenly:

You do not have permission to open the application "Zotero.".

My Zotero version is 5.0.94.

My MacOS version is 11.0.1.

I cannot find any other google solutions, so I write this discussion here hoping to get answers.

First, if you really mean macOS 11.0.1, update to 11.1.

And then, if you're still having trouble, delete Zotero from Applications (assuming that's where you have it — if not that's where it should be) and redownload it from the download page.

This is due to something that happened on your computer, not an issue with Zotero itself.

  • Thanks for your kind suggestion.

After I updated Zotero from 5.0.94 to 5.0.95, this issue is solved.

You could also go to the preferences in security-and select open that particular software. Apple is trying to steer everyone to using only software that has been vetted by Apple.
  • No, @mscman45, that’s not the issue here. Zotero is fully signed and notarized for macOS and doesn’t require any special actions to open (and if it weren’t it wouldn’t produce this error message anyway). @yufengcityu had some problem on their computer, and the only appropriate action was to redownload Zotero.
