Change group from private to public

Good morning....a few questions if I may

I want to share publicly (for view only) a group I
own entitled Wafers 'Dead See Scrolls'.

The Group setting is currently set to private and when I
go to change it oto public I get the following message.

'Changing a group to open will disallow storing of files
for the group. Before settings can be applied all file attachments
for the group will be deleted'.

1. Does this mean I lose all my work? I can't share this
group publicly for viewing only intact?

2. I have also paid for extra storage.

3. Does a person need to download the app for their
laptop and then create a free account to access the
public group for viewing. I do not wish to be sending
out invitations to join the group.
4. I understand there is no way to post a direct url link
to the group. They must have a Zotero account to
access the group. Correct?

Lots of question I know but I do not want to risk losing
all my work. I have tried searching out Zotero help but
have failed in finding a definitive answer. Poor search
on my part perhaps.

To Recap......I just want to share publicly (for viewing only)
the group entitled 'Wafers Dead See Scrolls' intact with
a direct URL link (if possible) and being able to post
that link on a website. I and one other person would
be the only members of the group to edit or add to
the collection.

Thks for your help

Tim

  • 1. Does this mean I lose all my work? I can't share this
group publicly for viewing only intact?
It's referring specifically to files (e.g., PDFs), not items. You can't share files publicly. Items will remain.
    3. Does a person need to download the app for their
laptop and then create a free account to access the
public group for viewing. I do not wish to be sending
out invitations to join the group.
No, the group is accessible online. You can share the URL once it's public.
  • If you want the group for public viewing only, you could also just set it to "closed, public", which will allow you to keep the file attachments (but don't make them accessible to visitors). That's how we have our groups intended for public access but not public contribution and it allows us to store attachments internally and share the metadata publicly.
  • Hopefully a final question. You can just provide a link
for public viewing from the browser. But a more elegant
view of a group seems to be available if you down
load the Zotero app to a laptop. You then can create
a free account and search for a group under the
group tab. The group displayed appears to be more
robust then viewing same group through browser.
    Would this be correct?
  • Kind of? If you join a group it will sync to the Zotero app and be available under "groups". This should look quite similar to the view on the website, though, so not sure what you mean by "more robust".

Note that the option to sync & display a group in the app would only be available for everyone who wants it if you create a public, open membership group. In a public, closed membership group, you'd have to individually invite or accept membership requests for people to join the group and only those who do would be able to sync. Everyone would be able to view the library on the website.
