Citation problem

When I insert a citation, the word citation appears in parentheses, not the formatted citation. Does anyone know how to correct this problem? Thank you
  • Could you describe in full what you're doing and what happens? What version of Word are you running?
  • I am running Microsoft Office 2019.

Here's what happened but as you will see below, I may have discovered the problem.

I place the cursor at the end of the sentence, I select Add Citation, and select “Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (full note)” for footnote and click OK. The Zotero bar appears, and i select the reference from the library. This is what appears in the footnote {Citation} instead of the actual formatted citation.

However, I may have discovered the problem: if I pick the classic view, and select from the library, rather than typing a part of the citation into the bar (e.g., title word) and then selecting from the options it appears to work this way and the full citation is entered. I thought that we could use the bar to scan for the reference rather than going back to the library, but it appears this is not the case.

I apologize for the bother and thanks kindly for getting back to me so quickly.

    Regards,
    Elaine
  • Do you actually press Enter in the citation dialog? That should close the citation dialog and insert the citation. Is this macOS or Windows?
  • I'm working on Windows. I think I did but perhaps I clicked outside. I don't want to recreate the situation now that it's working! But thanks so much I will take note if it happens again. Have a lovely weekend and I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my issue. Best regards, Elaine.
