Refresh citations and bibliography

Hello everyone!

I had to switch from Mendeley since Elsevier, in my humble opinion, ruined it.

I am working on my master's degree thesis using Zotero 5.0.91 (macOS) on Word (16.42) and I am experiencing some glitches.

I needed to cancel a citation [Elsevier- Vancouver] so I highlighted it, clicked on ADD/EDIT, and deleted it. I checked the bibliography but the reference was still there, so I tried to refresh, but nothing changed.
The only way to update the bibliography was by adding a new citation...

I am new to Zotero and I am sorry if this topic showed up before, but it's really different from Mendeley and I am still getting the hang of it

Any tips?

Thanks
  • If you want to remove a citation and it's the only cited item in that citation, you should remove the text of the citation from the document instead and click Refresh in the Zotero plugin. If you cited an item multiple times you will need to remove all those citations or occurrences of the item in citations before it disappears from the bibliography.

It might help to temporarily enable field code display to search for occurrences of the item https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/word_field_codes
  • Sorry but I am not sure of what you wrote.

    Let's make an example.

    TEXT:
Evidence that ART greatly reduces onward sexual transmission of HIV has been demonstrated by the PARTNER study [6–8] and the HPTN 052 study ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00074581 [9].

Let's say I have to delate [7] and [9], instead of highlight the brackets and delete them within the citation plug in, and than click refresh, I should cancel both references in the text and bibliography?
  • You'd do different things to remove [7] and [9]:
For 7, you'd indeed use edit citation, remove that item from the citation and the bibliography should update on refresh.
For 9, you'd just delete the whole [9] from Word (and again, the bibliography would update).
  • Now it's more clear thanks
