AMA In text citations all numbered 1

This is my first time using Zotero and everything has been fine except all my in-text citations are numbered (1) even though they are numbered in my bibliography. My "automatically update citations" is checked in the document preferences. Suggestions?

    2. What format is the file in?

    Im in Word 2011 (version 14.6.1) and its a .docx. I've been trying to add the citations using the word plug-in

    I'd also try switching to a different style and back and see if that triggers an update of the numbers.

    I tried switching my bibliography to MLA and keeping the citations numbered and they still came back 1

    What do you mean by "keeping the citations numbered"? Did they switch to MLA style -- i.e. just the author name in parentheses -- or did the stay (1)?

    Somehow got it to work..no idea how..thanks anyway though!!
