APA 7 Questions

edited April 7, 2020
If it is OK, I would like to use this thread to discuss less zotero-specific APA 6 questions.

Is there a forum (other than this one) where one can ask and get competent answers to tricky APA 6 questions?

I, for example, struggle with formatting my book-length manuscript in Word in accordance with APA 6. In particular, following the tables and figures prescriptions while maintaining information list of tables/figures.

On a more specific note, what do you do about a three part title like this one? Where does the relevant subtitle start? After — ... or after : ... ? With "On target?" as Short Title, I certainly do not get a capitalisation of "Public" as an output (see below).
Guilfoyle, S. (2012). On target?—public sector performance management: recurrent themes, consequences and questions. Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice, 6(3), 250–260. https://doi.org/10.1093/police/pas001
  • Both Public and Recurrent should be capitalized for APA. Currently, Zotero’s citation processor can only capitalize after one subtitle after a colon (expanded subtitle support is in the works). For now, I recommend you capitalize Public and then set the Short Title field to On target?—Public sector performance management so that Recurrent can be automatically capitalized.

I don’t know what exactly you mean about the tables/figures. Do you mean keeping the correct numbering throughout your document? If that’s the case, check out Word’s Caption and Cross-Reference features.

@bwiernik For example, according to the APA blog, one should include a copyright statement in a Figure description, which makes a Figure description quite long. I would say too long to be acceptable for a List of Figures.
From “Social Media: A Contextual Framework to Guide Research and Practice,” by L. A. McFarland and R. E. Ployhart, 2015, Journal of Applied Psychology, 100, p. 1656. Copyright 2015 by the American Psychological Association.
    See: https://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2016/01/navigating-copyright-part-4.html

A full Figure description would look like:
Figure X.X Some Kind of Figure Title. From “Social Media: A Contextual Framework to Guide Research and Practice,” by L. A. McFarland and R. E. Ployhart, 2015, Journal of Applied Psychology, 100, p. 1656. Copyright 2015 by the American Psychological Association.
Ideally, in the List of Figures only the following part would be displayed.

Figure X.X Some Kind of Figure Title.
    Figure X.Y Another Figure Title.
    etc.

This is probably more a APA-related Microsoft WORD question.
  • Put a line break after the figure title so that the automatic list of figures Word generates only includes the title. You can set this line break to be hidden if you want.

Also, personally, I just say “Reprinted with permission from McFarland and Ployhart (2015)” and include the reference in the reference list.
  • The line break does not seem to suffice ... at least at my end.

I found a fairly complicated suggestion at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_word-mso_other/how-do-i-create-a-caption-for-a-figure-using-apa/d6f17b1e-88df-425d-aa25-a16760ce2fc4 but find it difficult to execute the instructions.

I think I just stick with the official version as I have now formatted the Figure texts in that way.

Is PUBLISHER: PLACE not used any more in APA 6 for book chapters with DOI?

    For example:
Hviid, P. (2017). Cultural productions through resistance: An introduction to section I. In N. Chaudhary, P. Hviid, G. Marsico, & J. W. Villadsen (Eds.), Resistance in everyday life: Constructing cultural experiences (pp. 13–18). https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-10-3581-4_2
  • Yes, you are correct, APA 6 only uses one “where” element—DOI, URL, or Place: Publisher in that order. That has been the case ever since the first printing of the 6th edition manual. The 2012 APA Guide to Electronic References clarified the order of preference.

Zotero implements correct APA style correctly here.
  • APA 7 question: Is it possible to cite a numbered article in an issue of an online journal? If so, how?

I wonder how to cite the following article according to APA 7.
    Recommended Citation

Burman, Anders (2012) "Places To Think With, Books To Think About: Words, Experience and the Decolonization of Knowledge in the Bolivian Andes," Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge: Vol. 10 : Iss. 1 , Article 11.

Enter the number in Extra like this:
    Number: 11

(Rant: And man is this a stupid rule. Why don't they just treat an article number like a page number?)

Thanks, @bwiernik ! I'm with you on that one.

I have got another question. How can I achieve the following output?
    Block quotation with narrative citation:
Flores et al. (2018) described how they addressed potential researcher bias when working with an intersectional community of transgender people of color:

Everyone on the research team belonged to a stigmatized group but also held privileged identities. Throughout the research process, we attended to the ways in which our privileged and oppressed identities may have influenced the research process, findings, and presentation of results. (p. 311)

It seems to me that it is not possible to just insert just the page number of an entry.

I think I have read somewhere that this was requested a while ago but it appears that this was or is not easy to implement. If there is a solution to this that would be awesome. Cheers!
  • Just type the page number in text. There isn’t any real reason that needs to be a Zotero field at all
