"Loading Items" Error in Zotero Application for Mac

Report ID: 570651188

Steps to reproduce:

When I open the Zotero 5.0 Application on Mac, the message "Loading Items" and "Loading Tags" appear, instead of my files. When reporting errors, the following message appears:

[JavaScript Error: "Error(s) encountered during statement execution: database disk image is malformed [QUERY: SELECT itemID, fieldID, value FROM items JOIN itemData USING (itemID) JOIN itemDataValues USING (valueID) WHERE libraryID=? AND itemTypeID!=?] [PARAMS: 1, 1] [ERROR: database disk image is malformed]" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/db.js" line: 670}]

version => 5.0.60, platform => MacIntel, oscpu => Intel Mac OS X 10.12, locale => en-US, appName => Zotero, appVersion => 5.0.60, extensions => Zotero Word for Mac Integration (5.0.17.SA.5.0.60, extension), Zotero LibreOffice Integration (5.0.14.SA.5.0.60, extension), Shockwave Flash (32.0.0.142, plugin)

I have re-started my computer and quit and re-started the app several times. The same "Loading" message is in place of my files.

I have also attempted following these directions: “Help → Debug Output Logging → Restart with Logged Enabled…” to no avail.

When reporting start-up errors in Terminal/Debut Output, a very long message appears (too long to paste in entirety here). It begins this way:

[JavaScript Error: "Error(s) encountered during statement execution: database disk image is malformed [QUERY: SELECT itemID, fieldID, value FROM items JOIN itemData USING (itemID) JOIN itemDataValues USING (valueID) WHERE libraryID=? AND itemTypeID!=?] [PARAMS: 1, 1] [ERROR: database disk image is malformed]" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/db.js" line: 670}]

Thank you for your help!
  • database disk image is malformed
Your database is corrupted, which usually comes from keeping your Zotero data directory in Dropbox or another cloud storage folder. If that's the case for you, you should move it to your local hard drive.

To repair your database, you can try the DB Repair Tool.
