Zotero experienced an error updating your document

I've seen this discussed here several times, but nothing seems to fit my problem. I am running the latest update of Zotero (5.0.59) and running Word 2016 on a Windows 10 Pro 64 bit computer.

I repeatedly get this error now (just updated Zotero yesterday, not sure if that had anything to do with it.)

When I get the error, I close the Word document I was working in, and immediately reopen it and Zotero will work properly for two or three citations. Then it goes into this error mode again. I do the same process, close, reopen, insert citation, and we are back to normal until about the third or fourth attempt.

Kind of a pain.
  • What's the full error you're getting? Can you provide a Report ID after it occurs?

Did this just start with the latest update, or was it happening before?
  • Here is the exact error message I get:

Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

    [getDocument:d:\users\build\cygwin\home\build\zotero-word-for-windows-integration\build\zoterowinwordintegration\document.cpp]

I am pretty sure this error cropped up only after the last update. I had it in the past, but it has been some months ago, builds previous to this one didn't seem to have the error as far as I can tell. The last time I had it, I think something was causing corrupt citations, but they were fairly easy to spot. This time I looked through the document - cant' find any corrupted citations, they all look normal.

I am trying to observe what triggers it. So far it looks like I can insert citations as long as I don't save the document. As soon as I save, the error pops up. Then I have to close the document and reopen in order to insert more citations.

Ok, now I tried in another document. It doesn't appear to be a problem in the other document. But that one my citations were all new. So perhaps I have a corrupted citation somewhere in the first document anyway. It's not obvious which one, so will take some sleuthing if that is it.

Try moving the file that's failing out of OneDrive, if it's there.
