Zotero 5.0.21 > trouble with adding by identifier > ISBN

Hello,

I hope not to duplicate.

I have issues with the adding by identifier (ISBN).
The book is in worldcat, the import by connector works but fail with the “Add Item by Identifier” button.
For example : isbn 978-2-7598-1160-1

I don't know if it was a good idea : I tried again after resetting translators. No improvement.

But it works with DOI and PMID.

Thanks for your help,

debug ID : 990183787

version => 5.0.21
Mozilla Firefox 56.0
  • That should just work and does for me. Could you try one more time just to be sure?

@dstillman could you look at the error report (presumably that's what the number is), please?
  • Thanks for your answer. Just tried again and still not working.
    Error report : 1516446527
  • Could we get a debug ID trying to add by ISBN and failing (https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output ) it should start with a D

Also, could you see if you can import from
    http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=bn:978-2-7598-1160-1

    Sorry for the delayed response.

    debug ID : D898711750
No problem to import form worldcat.
  • (3)(+0001961): Zotero.HTTP.processDocuments: http://www.worldcat.org/search?qt=results_page&q=isbn:9782759811601 loaded

(3)(+0000001): Translate: No search results found for ISBN 9782759811601

(3)(+0000000): Translate: Could not retrieve any OCLC IDs
For some reason the WorldCat lookup within Zotero isn't returning any results for you. I'd wait to see if this is a temporary issue, since it works for us.
  • My friend is having the same issue. On my laptop, side by side with his, it works but on his it does not. Check all settings are the same and even tried uninstall and re-install. still no joy. Also changed fire wall settings to allow Zotero but still yielding no results.

I am a strong advocate for Zotero at our college and would like to help people feel confident in using it.

    Thank you for your reply.
    I tried another track.
Failure occurs when I work on my professional computer (same problem for my colleagues). But it works with my personal computer.
I deduced that this may be the setting of my workstation. I will refer my question to the administrator to check the machine or network settings.
Sorry for not having this idea before asking you :/
I will keep you informed of the outcome.
  • My friend and I are in the same setting. Has anyone discovered some settings that seems to hinder?
  • Hi,

    Just a brief feedback.
The IT ingeneer of my service couldn't solve the problem, obviously related to our network configuration.
    Her hypothesis : network micro-cuts.

The random behavior of zotero for import by ISBN is quite confusing.
    For example :
    - ISBN not working work with the adding by identifier BUT OK with Woldcat's website retrieval
    9782212558722 (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/880418166 : OK)
    978-2-02-062160-1 (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/777133325 : OK)

    - Adding by identifier OK
    9781856047135 : OK
    9781576753484 : OK, but 2 imports, (even 3). Import data from OCLC n° 844904000

For each case, the import process takes a long time (much more than with DOI or pmid).

It's embarrassing for students' training, but I explain that it should work with their personal computer (as with mine).
  • For training you could just "cheat" and use an ISBN that's in the Library of Congress. That should work for sure and much faster.
  • Thank you for this precious tip :)
  • @ALHB still trying to figure this out. Would you mind sharing at which institution you are? Also, if you navigate to http://worldcat.org, are you redirected to a different URL or not?
  • Adamsmith, thank you very much for your follow up !
I have just done a new test (9782275038506) : it works! (45 seconds to import the reference, but it works !).
To answer your questions : I am at Paris Diderot University. I requested additional information from the computer park manager of our library. In fact, we are on a NAT network (pool of 3 servers).
If I navigate to http://worldcat.org, I am not redirected to a different URL.
  • OK, thanks -- so this all appears to be working for you now, great. If you encounter problems again, please post back here -- I think there is still an issue somewhere, but hard to pin down because no one of us is seeing this.
