I got a new computer yesterday and I was trying to sync my work from my old computer to my new computer. I downloaded Zotero onto my new computer and logged into my account. When I try to sync my work from the old to new computer, I lost all my references when I clicked sync.
What do you mean by "I lost all my references"? Lost where?
What exactly did you do on the new computer?
To sync a new computer, all you have to do is enter your username and password in the Sync pane of the preferences and click Sync. There's no way for a sync from a new computer to delete anything.
If you used "Restore to Online Library" — which is the only existing data reset option — from the empty new computer, that would indeed wipe out all items in your online library, because that's what you told it to do.
If that's what happened and you haven't yet synced your old computer, we can walk you through restoring your library from that computer.
