"Word could not communicate with Zotero" with three full uninstalls and reinstalls

"Word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure that Zotero is open and try again."

(Mine didn't appear in the word ribbon, I manually added it, now it does but there's no connection to zotero) times the 3 times I did this

Mac book version: 10.13.6 (17G65)
Word version 16.16
Zotero version 5.0.55

After manually installing zotero so it shows up in Work, wherever I'm in it and I click Zotero, then add/edit citation, "Word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure that Zotero is open and try again." comes up.

Each time I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I've had to manually add the plug in because only Zotero LibreOffice comes up in the tools >add-ons> add-ons manager. (I know that I can do this properly because I was able to manually install it on my friend's computer and the ribbon works on her computer).

Zotero is not showing ANY mac extension under Tools → Add-ons → Extensions only Libre Office

I've been doing this four 5 hours. HELP

    right, without the add-on in Zotero this won't work.
    I'm unclear -- have you tried re-installing Zotero itself? That'd be the next step if you haven't done that already.

    It looks like you're running this from the disk image rather than dragging it to Applications first.
