scitation.aip.org translator broken

There are two issues with the site:
1. PDF file is not downloaded automatically.
2. Month if not correct, in the link below I got 'February 00'

http://scitation.aip.org/getabs/servlet/GetabsServlet?prog=normal&id=SJNAAM000023000001000178000001&idtype=cvips&gifs=yes

Thank you.
  • 1. Are you subscribed and signed in to the site? Can you view or download the PDF by clicking on its link on the site?
What happens if you follow the following link?
    http://scitation.aip.org/getpdf/servlet/GetPDFServlet?filetype=pdf&id=SJNAAM000023000001000178000001&idtype=cvips&prog=normal
I get a "User Authentication" page, and I can't go further because I'm not a registered subscriber of the site.

    2. After I add the item to Zotero, I see "February 00, 1986" in the Date field. Since the journal seems to have a monthly release only, that looks correct to me.
Is there any chance that the third pane in Zotero, where the "Info" tab is located, isn't wide enough for you to see the year? You can drag the pane to the left to make it wider if need be.

    1. Yes, I am a subscriber, though I do not have to sign in, since my institution is recognized automatically. Your link leads to a sign-in form which is useless for me cause I do not have a personal account.
    2. I got the same date, however, I do not know such a month 'February 00' (there is 'ym' string to the right from the date)
  • 1. Can you view the PDF at all without using Zotero?
Anyway, I'm not the best person to help with this issue, since I can't access the PDF myself.

    2. I believe the the 00 is just a placeholder for the day field, which does not apply to that particular journal. The "ym" indicates that Zotero recognizes the figures as representing a year (1986) and a month (February).
  • Hi, this translator is indeed working badly:
    1) pdf is not attached automatically,
    2) Abstract is not included (!)

This matters, since scitation.aip.org is the frontend for several of
the largest and most important physics journals, including Phys.Rev.Lett.

    Example link:

    http://scitation.aip.org/getabs/servlet/GetabsServlet?prog=normal&id=PRLTAO000097000011110403000001&idtype=cvips&gifs=yes

Could somebody please come to the rescue ?

    Thanks !

  • Apart form the abstract missing, there is another annoying problem: Physical Review B is recorded as journal name "Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics)". The subtitle "(Condensed Matter and Materials Physics)" is not part of the journal name and makes no sense in references, publication lists etc.
It obviously comes from the COinS entry "rft.title" - no idea why the AIP/APS people put it like that. It should be filtered out (or could someone contact the AIP/APS people to correct that?)

Actually, assuming your translators are working well, it comes from the RIS file used by the scitation translator. They haveJO - Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics)
JF - Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics)
All reference managers that download citations from the APS will be in the same boat & I don't think it is necessarily Zotero's place to change publication names. Further: subtitles may be useful information & I don't know if they should just be discarded.

This issue seems somewhat related to uniform, style-dependent journal abbreviations. A database containing ISSN, title, subtitle, common abbreviations, etc. would probably be useful sometime.
  • APS has removed the subtitle from the journal name from the COinS now.

But the other issues (missing abstract, date with '00' in it, no pdf download) still exist, right?
    just tried the following paper:
    http://link.aip.org/link/?RSINAK/71/2418/1
I can download the pdf manually, how can i add it to the item in Zotero? (So that it is stored in the Zotero directory with the same filename-auto-formatting that zotero does with automatically downloaded pdf's)
  • missing abstract, date with '00' in it, no pdf download
For the reference that you link to, the exported RIS has no abstract & the date (incorrectly) includes '00' in it. The defects are in what scitation exports, but perhaps Zotero should work around them. There is a ticket for PDF download: https://www.zotero.org/trac/ticket/1413

You might want to consider using zotfile:
