Trouble opening Zotero on macOS

  • Hi,
    I'm a new user for Zotero, but am having trouble opening the standalone Zotero app. I have macOS High Sierra (version 10.13.4). As soon as I open the app, an unknown error message pops up displaying the following:

    "[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsILocalFile.create]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/ipc.js :: Zotero.IPC</this.init :: line 36" data: no]
    Zotero.IPC</this.init@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/ipc.js:36:5
    this.init<@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/zotero.js:418:4
    From previous event:
    ZoteroService@file:///Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/Resources/components/zotero-service.js:338:4
    @chrome://zotero/content/include.js:4:14"

    Below this error message, I have two button options, either "quit" the app or "check for update". When I press the "check for update" button, a "no updates found" pop up window appears and when I hit "ok", the app simply crashes.

    Can someone help me in figure this out?
    Thanks!
    Tania
  • Are you running any non-standard security software on this computer?

    Have you run Zotero on this computer before? Is there any data you've saved previously?

    If there's no data you're trying to keep, I'd try deleting any "Zotero" directory in your home directory as well as the "Zotero" directory at /Users//Library/Application Support/Zotero. (See the note at Zotero profile directory for accessing that directory.) Then try starting Zotero again.

    If you're still having trouble, see Reporting Startup Errors.
