Does duplicating documents corrupt Zotero links in Word?

I've written three documents trying to use Zotero to manage citations in the past ~1 year and each time I've ended up with corrupt word documents. The documents seem to be fine for a little while and then one day I open it and Word won't even open it & typically my computer crashes. I have multiple drafts and have been passing drafts between computers and duplicating documents. Is it possible that duplicating documents messes up the communication with Zotero? I'm trying to understand why this keeps happening.
  • No, that would not be caused by duplicating the document. What you are describing is definitely not normal or expected. What operating system and version of Word are you using?
  • Word version is 2011 for Mac 14.7.7
    OS 10.9.5
  • That is a very old version of MacOS, no longer supported by Apple or Zotero. That said, you still shouldn't get document corruptions. Storing them in a synced directory (like Dropbox) or closing the documents improperly could cause it.
  • Sorry, are you referring to the saving the word documents in a synced directory or the pdfs of the references in Zotero? Would a shared server also be considered a synced directory?

I'll see if updating the OS helps in the future.
  • He means storing your Zotero database in a synced directory. A shared server would count too.

Since you are seeing corrupted Word documents, I was referring specifically to their storage (although storing the Zotero database in a synced directory is highly discouraged and could lead to its corruption too, but this is not the problem you are facing, I believe?)
