Do Zotero and Mendeley use the same CSL-editor, CSL-files etc.?

Hi,

Can I use the same CSL-file to install a style in both Zotero and Mendeley?

Do I use the same CSL-editor and edit the style in the same way, no matter if I intend to install the file in Zotero or Mendeley? For example, could I follow these instructions, even if I use Zotero?: https://www.mendeley.com/guides/csl-editor/04-example-modifying-et-al-usage

Basically, are there any differences?

Thank you!

  • yes. You can use .csl in both programmes (and many more).
  • The only thing is that I'd use the non-Mendeley version of the editor at http://editor.citationstyles.org/
I think we update it more frequently and it produces default style IDs instead of ones customized for Mendeley. It works exactly the same though.
  • Zotero and Mendeley mapped some items (variables) to the different CSL variables. It is really the very rare situation, but some styles can produce a little different output.
