Organizing the bibliography

Is there a way to sort/group items so that they output to a bibliography in sections - for instance "primary sources", "secondary sources", "articles" etc.?

Perhaps even creating subsections in the bibliography.

I am a brand new user and I see this as a fundamental need I would love to see addressed in an automated way.

You can sort bibliographies by item types or item type groups, but you can't, unfortunately, yourself group items in some other way and have that be reflected in the bibliography, no.
