Word could not communicate with Zotero.

Hi all,

So suddenly word has decided to not be able to communicate with Zotero. I haven't changed anything, as far as I know I haven't updated anything over the last few days. Any attempt to communicate with Zotero is met with:

"Word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure that Zotero is open and try again."

Both Word and Zotero are up-to-date. I've tried reinstalling the word plugin, but nothing changed.

Anyone else experiencing this or know what the issue might be?
  • Make sure that Zotero Word Integration is enabled in Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions in Zotero.
  • Yep, it is. I even tried disabling and reenabling. I literally have not changed anything and it's worked perfectly for ages.

One thing: in the extensions in zotero, it notes that the add-on for word was last updated 8th Feb (today). Could it be an issue with the latest update from Zotero?
  • Can you provide a Report ID?
  • Yep. It's 993657471
  • Could you submit a restart debug log (Help -> Debug Output Logging -> Restart with Logging Enabled...)? Then after a restart submit the log under Help -> Debug Output Logging and post the ID here.
  • Sure: D316650352.
  • What version of Word?

I assume you've tried restarting your computer?
[JavaScript Error: "can't assign to properties of (new Boolean(false)): not an object" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/quickCopy.js" line: 464}]
While it's almost certainly not causing this, if you're still having trouble after restarting, can you reset translators from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences, make sure you have a valid style or translator selected for Quick Copy in the Export pane of the preferences, restart Zotero, and provide another Report ID?
  • With Zotero open if you open the terminal (in Applications/Utilities, or find it via spotlight) and paste
    echo 'MacWord2016 addEditCitation' > ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/.zoteroIntegrationPipe
    what happens?
  • Ha! Restarting the computer worked. Not sure what went wrong, but it did the trick.

    Thanks
