    Hi, I've the same problem appearing in my thesis manuscript only. I made a copy of the whole document and unlinked citations, and I can add citations again. Does someone have a solution or at least, an explanation ?

    If this is on a Mac, make sure you're running Zotero 5.0.34.4, which is necessary for compatibility with the just-released Word 16.9.

    I had the same trouble today with Word for Mac 16.9 (180116) + Zotero 5.0.35-beta.8+d857a813b.

    I deleted the one reference and one-item bibliography already there, which solved the problem.
