Notes problem: why does Zotero require "edit in a separate window"?

This is a new and not constant problem. I go to add note and must use "edit in a separate window" The same with trying to edit an existing note. I don't see any options in preferences on this. What is wrong?

I'm not sure what you mean. You're saying when you click on a note you don't see the note contents in the right-hand pane? Can you take a screenshot, upload it somewhere (Dropbox, etc.), and provide a link here?

I was not able to enter or edit text in the main window and it seemed I had to use the edit in separate window option. Now, after closing zotero down for a while, it seems to be working as it should again.
