Anomalous formatting of citation

Sometimes in papers that ordinarily use some other formatting style for their references, you get something like this "The example of a ZFP-TF designed by Liu et al. (2001) to target the VEGF-A gene...". I don't know if there is some term that describes this situation. Is there a way of handling it in Zotero (I want the majority of references in my paper to be formatted in the form (Liu et al., 2001)).
  • The current best method is to type the author manually & check "suppress author" when you add a new citation.
