citations with different first names

Hi everyone,
There is a citation (Jones 2000). Then I tend to cite another (Jones 2001) but Zotero automatically changes both citations to (C. Jones 2000) and (B. Jones 2001). I understand why Zotero does that because Jones have different first names, or they are different persons.

In fact, I don't want to add the first names in front of the two Jones because the different years is enough to make them distinguishable. In other words, I only want (Jones 2000) and (Jones 2001). I can manually edit the two citations to my liking but they will go back to (C. Jones 2000) and (B. Jones 2001) once I switch to another citation style.

Is there any way to get around this problem?
Thank you very much.

@dukesyr: Two questions: Which style are you using, and what version of Zotero are you using?

(The info will help me to reproduce the behaviour, and check the CSL formatting options that cause it.)
  • @febennett: This happens with all of the styles, I guess although I just tried APA, APSA, and Chicago. This happens with the old and latest 1.5 version.

I look forward to your help.
    Thanks.
  • Thanks for suggesting a few style names; I did need that info to follow up (different styles use different disambiguation options, I needed to identify the specific ones that are causing you trouble).

I've confirmed that with the APA style, in Zotero 1.5b2, the behaviour is exactly as you describe. I agree that it's not correct; if the year differs, there is no need for disambiguation, so the base form of the name should be used, and in APA that should be Jones' last name with no initials.

Can't offer any immediate solution, but a new CSL processor is under development, which will handle this case in the way that you (that we all) prefer. It will take some time to arrive, but it's in the works, and will become available in due course.

Sorry I can't be more help.
  • I look forward to the new CSL processor. Thank you.
  • @fbennett: Can you please tell me how I know when the new CSL processor is available for use or update?
  • It's hard to say. My end of things may be finished sometime during the summer, any integration into Zotero will take longer, and will presumably depend on other priorities of the project. So it will be awhile, but it's coming.
