how to use Zotero on local network with database ?
i understand that Zotero works online but i want adopt it in my entreprise without cloud for more security...can you inform me about it ?
  • You can run without syncing and without groups, of course.

If it is OK to sync metadata via outside networks without syncing files, you can use Zotero's syncing. Groups would not have file syncing; you could, optionally, sync individual account files via internally-hosted WebDAV.

If it is not OK, you could look into self-hosting the Zotero server, but note this does not give you any official support and the non-WebDAV file syncing still relies on Amazon.

I do not see any documentation about self-hosting a Zotero server. Do you know if there is one ?

Nothing currently useful, no (all existing documentation is outdated). Zotero makes the code available but doesn't provide any support for self-hosted servers. The code is here: https://github.com/zotero/dataserver a Docker package is planned, but no ETA.
  • Sounds like the introduction of an official Docker package hinges on dropping Zotero 4.0 sync support, per https://github.com/zotero/dataserver/issues/75#issuecomment-368259275 (which to my knowledge also doesn't yet have an ETA).

In the meantime, I did stumble on https://github.com/gfacciol/zotero_dataserver-docker.
  • Ability to run Zotero from a local server would be of interest to me, too. While promoting Zotero at my organization I hit the security wall. There were other security concerns that indirectly affect Zotero's functionality - such as disallowing browser add-ons. I wonder if having a local server can come with a custom browser add-on that might pass security concerns more easily?
