Help! Cannot make Zotero work at all.

For the last weeks my Zotero has not been working properly but now it has
stopped completely. I have tried updated the last version and now I cannot
even log in in the standalone version. Nothing works. The story: it was
cosntantly bringing pop-ups saying that there was a mistake in the the
database and it could not be updated, and asking whether I wanted to restart
it (it never managed to restart). Today I got a message asking me to update
firefox link and the standalone version, I thought that would solve it. I updated it and nothing works. Accesing my library is of upmost importance in my work, what can I do?
Thanks in advance for any help!
  • This is the message I get when trying to open the Standalone version:

  • thanks a lot adamsmith,
I have several of those files, most of them with th extension DAMAGED. Which one should I upload?
    thanks again!
  • Hard to tell -- I'd maybe start with the largest one (by file-size).

Also, is there anything unusual about how you have Zotero set-up? E.g. is your data directory in a custom location?
  • thanks, I will try with the largest one first.
And yes, I have it stored in Google Drive so that I can access it from different places. Do you think that is the problem. If so, is there any way to have a similar setting that can be syncronized in different places.
    thanks for all your help!
  • Yes, that's definitely the issue. You should definitely not store the data directory in any synced folder and what you're seeing is exactly the type of problem we'd expect.

Use Zotero for data syncing. You can use Zotero file storage or a webDAV server to sync files, or you can put the files on Google Drive and link to them (typically using ZotFile). Zotero file storage is, of course, easiest to use, but you can find plenty of information on both other methods on the forums.
