Export library to WOS-like tab delimited format

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way of exporting a zotero collection I have into a tab-delimited file with the same format that web of science outputs when you export result of a search to "other file format">>"tab delimited file" (exporting full record).
My purpose is to use this with the nails software (http://nailsproject.net/) to run some bibliographic analyses, and produce network files (nodes and edges) to create some nice visualization of my corpus using gephi.

has anyone tried this?
any suggestion on a way to achieve it?

    AB This paper presents a collaborative control strategy designed to enable a team of robots to track attracting Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) and unstable manifolds in two-dimensional flows. Tracking LCS in flows is important for many applications such as planning energy optimal paths in the ocean and for predicting the evolution of various physical and biological processes in the ocean. The proposed strategy which tracks attracting LCS and unstable manifolds in real-time through direct computation of the local finite time Lyapunov exponent field, does not require global information about the dynamics of the surrounding flow, and is based on local sensing, prediction, and correction. The collaborative control strategy is implemented on a team of robots and theoretical guarantees for the tracking and formation keeping strategies are presented. We demonstrate the performance of the tracking strategy in simulation using actual ocean flow data and experimental flow data generated in a tank. The strategy is validated experimentally using a team of micro autonomous surface vehicles in an actual fluid environment.

  • Sorry, Zotero doesn't output that format. It's vaguely related to RIS, so if you do want to do this yourself, that's where you would likely want to start, but it's a very significant amount of effort to do this.
  • Mmmmm, I understand. I was kind of hoping it still was some known format that I could get out of zotero.
    Exporting a RIS and coming up with a script able to convert it into this is something I'm not really sure is worth the effort.

    Any other suggestion? Is this format handled/able to be exported by any other ref software? Zotero is what I rely on but if I need to first export to, say Endnote or Mendeley, and then be able to export this format it would be great.

    Disclosure note: I still would like zotero the best.... I just think that it's a pity that other nice open-source and free tools that are being developed out there (like this nails tool) are created to depend on a specific database (like WOS in this case, or PubMed as I saw in other cases) and not on well-established formats like RIS or similar
  • definitely not Mendeley. I don't know about Endnote.
  • Endnote can only import, not export ISI format. The ISI format is very lossy on import to many tools, so I would try to avoid it if at all possible.

    Allow me to echo and expand on what @bwiernik said. I’ll go further and say that I’ve found ISI-tagged format available from WoS to 1) omit some author names; 2) omit some of the references that are included in the WoS website record; and 3) truncate titles so to omit subtitles. I find 1 and 3 most troublesome. With #3 you can get for example: The importance of the literature when forming policy. Part 1: What databases to search. The importance of the literature when forming policy. Part 2: Properly constructing your search with database-specific index terms. The importance of the literature when forming policy. Part 3: Winnowing your search results. etc. The ISI format results will often give you 3 items titled, “The importance of the literature when forming policy” and not the full titles. If you click the Zotero download button from WoS you will get full titles. (I listed imaginary titles for my examples.) For your purposes my item 2 will probably present the greatest source of bias.

    Out of my own curiosity, please share the purpose of your desire for the ISI-tagged file. Is that the only format allowed with Nails? When I spent time looking at the format I was thinking about writing a manuscript about the purposes, strengths, and weaknesses of several metadata storage and transport formats. I learned a lot about metadata transport and realized that no one in their right mind would want to read my attempt to compare and contrast the various formats.
  • Actually, it looks like the Publish or Perish program might be able to import this format and then export to various more useful ones.

    When calculating authorship stats, it is clear that Publish or Perish makes multiple calls to Google Scholar. Does it use some mechanism that could be used by Zotero to reduce the risk of being labeled a robot?
  • they have the same captcha problem Zotero has (there's an FAQ about that on the site) -- Since they don't need the bibtex they make a couple fewer calls and Google seems particularly concerned about bibtex scraping so it may take a bit longer to kick in.

  • No, this format is not widely used and is lossy, so an export translator has not been written for it. I recommend using CSL-JSON, RIS, or BibTeX.
