Using Zotero 4 on Firefox 56.0 - Ubuntu 16.04. When I try to sync I get the following message: "A file sync error occurred. Please try syncing again. If you receive this message repeatedly, restart Firefox and/or your computer and try again. If you continue to receive the message, submit an error" I restarted Firefox and the computer but nothing changed.

What specific version of Zotero 4? You could try to upgrade to Zotero 5, which has a completely new and better sync system.

I am using Zotero 4.0.29.23. I have not installed Zotero 5 yet because I have found no detailed tutorial (with the detailed terminal commands).

I'm not sure what terminal commands you're referring to. Upgrading to Zotero 5 just entails installing Zotero 5 and the Zotero Connector from the download page.

In order to install zotero as a standalone on a linux computer you have to open the Terminal and tell him what to do with the downloaded file. I don't know the commands.
